If you have room in your garden, think about planting some
garlic. It’s not only great for rubbing on your bread and flavoring meats and
vegetables during the summer grilling season, fresh garlic is good for you.
Ancient healers used it for various ailments and it worked
so well that the Egyptian slaves who built the pyramids were given the cloves
to promote strength and prevent diseases, and look at the results.
During WWI garlic was used as a remedy for soldiers as an
antibiotic treatment. When the cloves are chewed or crushed, the natural
antibiotic properties in the herb are released to fight infection. Mix it with
a bit of honey and sooth a sore throat as you try to fight off the infection.
Garlic is also used to lower plaque in the arteries of the
heart and to lower cholesterol.
You can heat it, but if you cook the garlic, the antibiotic
effects are lost, so find as many ways to use it fresh and raw as you can. Add
crushed cloves to olive oil and use it over the salad or brush it on bread. Add
crushed cloves to butter, cream cheese or just chew a clove or two.
If you’re worried about your breath, chew some mint leaves.
